Benefits of Craniosacral Therapy for Infants
Craniosacral Therapy (CST) is a gentle and non-invasive therapy that involves the placement of hands on areas of the head, neck and body to release tension in connective tissues. This therapy focuses on the Craniosacral system, which includes the protective membranes and cerebrospinal fluid surrounding the brain and spinal cord.
The pressure applied during CST is as light as a nickel, ensuring a painless and soothing experience. CST has been scientifically proven to enhance the functioning of the central nervous system while also benefiting other bodily systems like the respiratory, digestive, circulatory, and musculoskeletal systems.
Supporting Infants' Unique Needs
CST holds significant promise for newborns and infants, especially those facing post-birth challenges stemming from the effects of labor on their nervous and other systems. This can result in issues related to nursing, jaw and bone development, and digestive function.
Other conditions or symptoms that CST can help include:
difficulty swallowing or latching/poor feeding
tightness in the body or preferring one side to another
fussing, inconsolable crying, back arching
reflux and other digestive concerns
crossed or wandering eyes
Promoting Development through Reflex Integration
One of the benefits of CST throughout infancy is assisting the integration of primitive reflexes. This is a critical aspect of a child's development during their first two years. By promoting reflex integration, CST supports development, even in an age where certain milestones have been delayed due to changing sleep guidelines.
Preparing for an Infant CST Session
When preparing for an infant CST session, bringing along familiar toys or allowing for calming, engaging activities can help ease the process. For older babies or younger toddlers, even watching a video like Ms. Rachel can be helpful to keep them relaxed during the session.
Reinforcing CST Benefits at Home
Each session will include a description of developmental exercises to do with your child to help reinforce the treatment and/or prepare for a future session. After an assessment and treatment, we allow time for integration of new skills and for parents to continue to support their infant's development at home. Some examples of developmental exercises may include:
Tummy Time: On a parent’s chest or shoulder, or get down on the floor with them! These activities will help strengthen your baby’s neck and support their digestion.
Side Sleeping: This allows more freedom of movement and range of motion to enhance their mobility.
Empowering Infants to Thrive
Craniosacral Therapy offers a path to alleviate many of the challenges infants face. It empowers them to develop and thrive more fully. By removing obstacles to their development, CST helps infants grow into happier, more relaxed babies who can reach their full potential and lead healthier lives overall. Treatments may be recommended weekly, monthly or quarterly/as needed depending on the specific concerns of the child.
